grown

a pretty frequent statement around our house, besides “do you have to go potty?” is “i didn’t know you could do that!” olive is constantly surprising us with her vocabulary, abilities and interests.  i especially realize how much she’s grown when i see pictures like this.

she’s got this great little sense of humor.  and a beautiful laugh to match!

olive loved the easter bunny’s gift of thomas the train.  with the push of a button he takes off on the track by himself…he even has a little light to see his way through the tunnel.  every morning for days following this is what she’d do first thing:

olive was so excited this morning about going to the farm, that she wouldn’t eat her favorite cereal. i had to pull out the big guns with a pancake to get something in her.  last night, after days and weeks of not actually falling asleep until after 9pm, i told her before bed, “tomorrow we’re going to the farm. you need a good night sleep. so when you go down, you’re staying down.” thank the cows and turkeys because she actually did!

as always, a wonderful time at nc state’s farm days. you just can’t go wrong when it comes to petting baby animals, sitting on tractors, and eating the most delicious ice cream while overlooking a pond and field of cows!  ps. my favorite part was actually finding my car this year! much better than the 30 minutes (literally!!!) it took last year. whew!

we finished the awesome morning off with a calzone at vic’s with carter & a fun visit with leeann hynes at epona and oak.  perfection!

thanks to friends laurel and amy for the beautiful pictures…and for remembering your cameras!

about 6 weeks after having olive, we were taking a walk through the neighborhood. a neighbor thoughtfully told me that there were a couple of other new moms in the hood and that she’d pass my email along to them.  that was pretty much the turning point for me where i wasn’t on an island anymore as a new mom.  since then the couple of moms has turned into close to a dozen amazing women that help me laugh, relax and have a whole lot of fun.  olive and i are all the better for it!

this month our library takes a hiatus from storytime to prepare for the upcoming season.  what could’ve been a boring time…i mean, how can i beat a guitar-wielding librarian dude?!…turned into this awesome opportunity to explore our neighborhood and enjoy the beginnings of spring. so far we’ve had coffee and baked goods at one mom’s house, done a trip to the park, played trains and chased cats at another friend’s house and yesterday, the best of all, we walked to krispy kreme and burned off some sugar at a nearby playground!  i can’t wait to see what we do next week!

my mom and mother-in-law both have dear friends that started when they became moms…i’m really lucky and happy to be continuing this tradition…besides, any tradition involving donuts is alright by me!

what, or who i should say, could get this group from here:

to here:

three words: “rock star librarian”

cameron village library is the locale of mr. erik’s day job…child librarian. by night, he’s rocking with his band “static minds.”  these pictures don’t even really do him, or the library’s program, justice. the girls are usually getting their groove on from the second he starts his opening song, “read and jump and rock it!”  the room gets pretty packed…around 40 plus moms, dads, caretakers and kiddos.

it’s definitely a highlight of our week and a saving grace for this sahm!

mr. moms

as our friend, kara, and i sold our wares at ELF in carrboro this past december, our guys dutifully took over care of the girls.  they even have matching diaper bags.  cute, right?

(who would ever guess these two guys are in one killer rock band?!)

luckily for baby it’s unseasonably warm today. otherwise, it’d be a chilly choice to visit the park in your birthday suit.

manhood vs. girl power

although there are an equal number of boys (carter & sandwich) and girls (olive & i) things still seemed a bit tipped in the girlie scale.

(in this picture, sandwich has clearly given up on trying to maintain any sort of masculinity. i think he even enjoyed the “blankie” olive gave him…that tail is thumping away!)

saturday at the park

saturday morning we hustled up to the krispy kreme to witness some of the spectacle of the krispy kreme challenge. only in the south would they combine a 5 mile race with eating a dozen hot & now donuts.  it was quite a sight! afterwards we strolled down to a little park nestled in the neighborhood for some playtime with a good pal.

perfect way to start the weekend!

(even though some teens…i’m assuming teens here…wrecked some of the equipment, the girls still found a way to make the “see saw” work! nothing’s stopping these gals from a good time!)

big sis

my good friend kate recently had her second amazing baby girl.  we wanted to celebrate the occasion by throwing a big sister party for clara.  it was a lovely afternoon of cupcakes (clara’s one requested item!), fizzy pink lemonade, tutus and fabric paint.  the girls decorated onesies for baby to wear…although with the thick layer of paint they each slathered on, the onesies now grace their dolls instead! what a fun time!

ps. my friend amy very thoughtfully acted as clara’s big sister fairy and brought her a little treat every night for a week.  what a special way to keep some focus on clara’s important new role!

(notice how olive’s given up, temporarily, on painting her onesie and has moved on to painting her hand.  made me fully appreciate the craft projects her teachers do with her at school.  much more fun to receive a nice piece of art and a clean child than to be a part of the cleanup crew!)
